Art. Lebedev Studio, the guys behind the Optimus Maximus OLED Keyboard have come up with an incredible looking keyboard concept, the Optimus Tactus Keyboard.
This new keyboard has no physical keys, which means there are no restrictions on their shape or size. The keyboard can be programmed to display any images and perform any function.
Would you want one? It looks so cool – I hope that it becomes a reality.

uber gear, but the price is definitely expected to be floating at around $1000, as their current OLED keyboard with normal style keys (with oled screens on them of course) is at this price level. either way i want it!!

I wonder if I can think of anything worse than trying to type on a completely flat surface.
Hmmm, nope. I can’t.

It’s official; these people hate hands with a passion. Can you imagine how uncomfortable typing on a flat surface would be?

100% agree, was my first thought when I saw this. It definitely looks cool and all, but scores a 0 in practicality.

I really like that keyboard. It comes programmed with most of the apps I already use. But I like the satisfying tap of each key when typing.

It wouldn’t be bad at all. It could use feedback, like LG’s new touchscreen phone, the Voyager.

Looks good, but not good enough to replace the one I currently use.

For many people who know how to touch-type, and enjoy doing so, the tactile feel of the keyboard is part of the experience. This would probably feel like tapping your fingers on a table, which one needs only do for a few seconds before realizing it sucks.

Hmm…. Works on Star Trek, so it should be fine!

I prefer the tactile sensation of having the keys push back after I hit them…

That’s pretty cool, but does it work with Linux?

Cool-lookin’ - but as one who longs for the old IBM Model M keyboard, and who buys up old keyboards at garage sales, I can’t imagine that I’d like actually using it.
For me, keep the groovy stuff on-screen. Except for cases of disability adaptation, the user interfaces should be invariable; the less we have to think about ‘em, the more useful they’ll actually be. (How would it be if, every time you got into a car, you had to figure out how to use the brakes?)

Multitouch is the way of the future!…Look at Star Trek! LOL! Can’t think of anything cooler than one of those consoles…unless of course you go into Minority Report territory!
Besides…there have been flat-ish keyboards in the past…they ain’t so bad!

They learned that a competitor has developed a keyboard using touch buttons (think i-phone) and shit their pants because the Optimus keyboard had been obsoleted. Hilarious! That’ll teach them to charge way too much and take waaaaay too long to release a product. This keyboard will fail to the competitor called logitech. lol

If it wasn’t pure vaporware like the last Optimus I’d caution people away from a keyboard this useless and ergonasty.

There are ways to give force feedback so that typing on a flat surface feels like pressing keys, so I can sort of see this working, assuming they can get their hands on a license for one of those methods. But yeah, without feedback it would be horrible.

A needle for each key?
I think I’m already typing on a flat surface, i don’t know what you guys are talking a back, you just wouldn’t have any clicking feedback or pressure feedback, how is that very hard to get used to?
As for customizing your keyboard… who wouldn’t want to get rid of some keys and space out keys perfectly how you need them in order to reach / not accidentally hit? I think its a great concept idea and if affordable I would get one

I’d never be able to type without tactile feedback… Hell I can barely type on a laptop keyboard
